In Leaf by Niggle by J. R. R. Tolkien, Niggle spends his whole life trying to paint a great forest. He never quite finishes it—only one leaf becomes fully realized. After his death, he enters heaven and discovers the forest at last, alive and complete. He walks among the trees, birds building nests in their branches, and sees everything just as he imagined it—and so much more. He exclaims, “It’s a gift!”
My art feels like that.
I try to catch a tiny glimpse of what is to be. I know there is so much more beyond what I can draw, and yet I offer these small fragments—little leaves—hinting at the beauty of heaven. As I draw, I find myself longing to step into the forest too. For now, these are the leaves I’ve made.
