R. R. Tolkien, Niggle spends his whole life trying to paint a great forest. He never quite finishes it—only one leaf becomes fully realized. After his death, he enters heaven and discovers the forest at last, alive and complete. He walks among the trees, birds building nests in their branches, and sees everything just as he imagined it—and so much more. He exclaims, “It’s a gift!” My art feels like that. I try to catch a tiny glimpse of what is to be. I know there is so much more beyond what I can draw, and yet I offer these small fragments—little leaves—hinting at the beauty of heaven. As I draw, I find myself longing to step into the forest too. For now, these are the leaves I’ve made. Ruthy Kim is an LA-based Korean American illustrator and designer who shares stories through illustrations that capture moments of joy, wonder, and quiet hope. Her work offers a glimpse of heaven. I would love to work on other people’s portraits, but self-portraits? I was busy planning for my wedding, and I was wondering if I should participate at all. Then I decided to draw myself as a bride- an imperfect bride. Ruthy Kim is a Los Angeles-based illustrator and designer passionate about sharing stories through illustrations that commemorate the joyous moments in life. The Spring Bride Series is a personal exploration of transformation and celebration. As Kim prepares for her own wedding in the spring, these self-portraits capture the anticipation and joy of a life-changing moment.
